ONCE UPON AY TIME IN MUMBAI DOBAARA : Movie Review

Underworld don Shoaib (Akshay Kumar), returns to Mumbai from Dubai with his best friend Javed (Sarfaraz Khan) and former lover Mumtaz (Sonali Bendre Bahl). His trustee Aslam (Imran Khan) is told to kill  to kill rival Sultan Mirza (Mahesh Manjrekar). Aslam falls in love with Jasmine Sheikh (Sonakshi Sinha), an aspiring actress in Bollywood. Jasmine also catches Shoaib's fancy. A love triangle ensues.
Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha
A sequel to OUATIM, this story about romance amongst gangsters is written by Rajat Aroraa. The dialogs are apt to the situations. Otherwise, a regular story about a love triangle with situations and faces changed and so the script has its weaknesses. How many times can steam be reinvented? Shoaib is of course the highlight in the screenplay. Performance-wise, Akshay Kumar in his negative role as Shoaib does justice to his role. Imran Khan  tries, but he isn't yet so bursting with emotion as a depiction by a Milan Luthria might demand. Sonakshi Sinha is trying to put out her best but her chemistry with Imran Khan fails. But Jasmine opposite Shoaib shines. Sonali Bendre Bahl is first rate. Mahesh Manjrekar  is totally wasted. Pitobash Tripathy as Deta is justified. Kurush Deboo, Tiku Talsania, Faraz Deswali, Sophie Choudhry offer adequate support. Vidya Balan in a cameo is a delightful surprise. Poonam Dhillon is miscast.
Milan Luthria has delivered a good 160 min long odyssey. Musically, Pritam and Anupam Amod are average. YE TUNE KYA KIYA and TAYYAB ALI PYAAR KA DUSHMAN-revisted sound good. Action by Javed Eijaz is okay. The cinematography by Ayanaka Bose is superb. Akiv Ali’s editing is sharp. The film’s production design, art work and costumes are commendable. The production values are excellent. Technically, very good. The publicity was good.
At the box office, the film opened on Independence day with average response and is likely to seize the advantage of the holidays upto Raksha Bandhan on the 20th.
